OSX Mavericks: AudioUnit Editors do Crash

Renoise seems very crash prone lately. It used to be as stable as a house, and if it crashed it was always to blame on some Audio Units (I’m looking at you, EWQL Play!). Not so anymore.

Today I was trying to compose a song, and Renoise has crashed about 8 times in the space of less than 2 hours. These crashes happen whenever I do something Audio Unit related. My current project has a few instances of Kontakt 5 in it, and whenever I press the “External editor” button to actually load any patch into Kontakt there’s a good chance of Renoise crashing.

I experienced a similar crash when I dragged an instance of Guitar Rig from one track to another. It might be related.

I’m running OSX 10.9 Mavericks. maybe that causes weird behaviour related to AU plugins?

Also I originally suspected that the Native Instruments were to blame because I installed ~20 updates from them. However, when I tested it with Zebra2, it also crashed Renoise. So it doesn’t seem to be a NI problem.

Any hints? Or crash logs I should attach to this message?

To elaborate on my own question, here’s the error I get:

(sorry for the large image, forgot I’m on a retina display…)

Here’s what the console logfile says

27/10/13 18:14:59,116 Renoise[1008]: Error loading /Applications/AutomapServer.app/Contents/Resources/AutomapServerEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AutomapServerEngine: dlopen(/Applications/AutomapServer.app/Contents/Resources/AutomapServerEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AutomapServerEngine, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Applications/AutomapServer.app/Contents/Resources/AutomapServerEngine.bundle/Contents/MacOS/AutomapServerEngine: mach-o, but wrong architecture

So the issue might be Automap related as well, but it worked before in OSX 10.8 and the system architecture didn’t change at all. Weird.

edit
I uninstalled Automap and it still crashes. It’s not an Automap issue.

Also found the log file, so here’s the entire log for a Renoise session with a crash:

strange, I’m also riding mavericks, but don’t have those problem with plugins… all my plugins, even some quite old 32-bit ones are working perfectly fine… Do you have similar problems in other hosts?

I just tried it in Logic Pro X, and there my plugins work just fine.

Also tried it again in Renoise, and it’s definately Renoise/AU related. I can use the VST versions of my plugins just fine, they don’t crash. But whenever I start up an AU plugin and open the external window, it crashes.

Seems to happen with Audiounits in the 32bit version of Renoise on Maverick only. 64 bit Renoise and VSTs do work fine.
EDIT: seems to happen in 64 bit builds too. But VSTs are indeed working fine.

Looking forward to the day where a new OSX release does not break Renoise. Working on a fix to get this sorted out quickly.

Great news! Let me know if you want me to test something.

the same for me, it crashes when opening plugin interfaces

Have been trying to work around the issue by sticking to VST plugins, but even so I encountered a few more different crashes. I’ll update here if I find out more details…

There are 2.8.2 beta releases for OSX on the Renoise Backstage now: http://backstage.renoise.com

Would be great if you could test those and report any issues here. 2.8.2 fixes the critical crash with AUs on OSX Maverick and also all pending bugs listed here. If things seem to work fine we’ll release 2.8.2 for the other platforms too.

Thanks, taktik!

Just gave this beta a quick spin, and the audio unit problem is now gone (tested on 2 different machines). I’ll have to give it some more test work (meaning: work some more on the track I was working on and watch how it behaves), but so far it looks good. Didn’t experience any of the other bugs that are fixed myself yet, so can’t test those.

edit

Just tested it with a random list of plugins and with most AU plugins the external window appears fine. Except for Spectrasonics Trillian. When opening the external window it says:

Error Message: Failed to create the plugin GUI. See the log for details.

And checking the logs doesn’t help, because all it gives me is the same line.

Weirdly enough the Trillian AU version works fine in Logic Pro X and the VST version works fine in Renoise. Also Omnisphere (from the same company) works fine in both AU and VST format.

will try new release on mavericks, just to confirm that it works for me with fix also, although I haven’t got any au related problems.

Thanks for update!

I was having problems with Ozone crashing in Renoise, but this beta release totally fixed it. Thanks!!

Unfortunately don’t have Trillian here to test this. Did it worked just fine in previous Renoise or OSX versions? Have you tried both, 32 and 64 bit Renoise versions?

It worked fine in Renoise 2.8.1 64bit in combination with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. I never tried it in 32 bit versions of Renoise.

I just downloaded the 32 and 64 bit versions of 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 and now Renoise doesn’t even see my Spectrasonics plugins anymore in both AU and VST version. Not sure what’s happening (they do show up and work fine in Logic). Will have to dig into it this weekend, maybe clearing all leftover Renoise caches and try again. Weird.

Doh. Stupid me. Was tired and in a hurry yesterday and was looking at track DSPs in stead of instruments, that’s why I couldn’t find Trilian there.

Managed to test properly today, here’s the results. All tested with an empty Renoise track:

  • 2.8.1, 32bit: Trilian AU works
  • 2.8.2, 32bit: Trilian AU works
  • 2.8.1, 64bit: Trilian AU works, but Renoise crashes due to AU issue
  • 2.8.2, 64bit: Trilian AU works

In the track I’m working on now (which I started in 2.8.1, 64bits) I get a “Failed to create the plugin GUI. See the log for details.” error while trying to open Trilian’s external editor. But is the only place where I have seen this happen so far. So it’s probably safe to ignore :)

I had problems with Omnisphere and Trilian AU’s and this seems to have solved that whereas before it would crash 2.8.1 every time after updating to 10.9. Thanks taktik!

Having used the 2.8.2 beta for a few days now I must say it has been running smoothly. No crashes anymore and AU plugins work fine.
